Lauryn Hill Pleads Guilty in New Jersey Tax Case

Lauryn Hill

Lauryn Hill plead guilty to failing to file income tax returns for several years with the IRS, The Associated Press reports.

On Friday, Hill appeared in a New Jersey court, admitting that she did not file tax returns from 2005-2007 on the $1.5 million earned over those three years. Hill's sentencing is scheduled for November in order to give her time to repay the taxes. The Grammy-winning singer faces the maximum of one year in jail on each count.

Lauryn Hill hit with federal tax charges in N.J.

Hill, 37, first entered the spotlight in the '90s as one-third of The Fugees, best known for their hip-hop remake of Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly." She went onto sell 8 million records and garner the biggest critical acclaim of her career for her 1998 solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. In recent years, she has largely dropped out of the public eye to raise her six children. She currently lives in South Orange, N.J.
