Katie Holmes: The Public Perception of Me Is Wrong

Since she became half of one of the world's most famous couples, Katie Holmes has been under the scrutiny of the spotlight alongside her husband, Tom Cruise. Yet, the actress, 29, insists that the public perception of her is all wrong.
"There's a misperception about me that I just became this wallflower, this woman who doesn't have any control of her life," she says in the upcoming T: The New York Times Style Magazine. "And that's pretty wrong. From the very beginning, I've made choices in my life that have been very strong."
Holmes also gushed about how her ostensible storybook romance with Cruise, 46, swept her off her feet. "When I met Tom I was completely in love and, yes, I admired him growing up — he's Tom Cruise!" she confided. "When I met him, he was so warm and I thought, Wow! You can be a superstar and a human being. He made me feel so amazing." The couple married in 2006 in Italy.
Cruise, who was interviewed separately for T, also opened up about their whirlwind love story. "I knew I wanted to marry Kate when I met her," he says. "After our very first date, I was sure. At one point, I thought she was going to ask me to marry her first and I cut her off by changing the subject. I wanted to ask her."
So how does an actress, mother of a toddler and superstar wife maintain happiness under the spotlight? Holmes, who's currently appearing in a Broadway production of All My Sons, says she blocks out the world and the buzz about her. "I have too much to do," she says. "I can't pay attention to all that noise."
