Though Katie Holmes had to spend her 30th birthday working, hubby Tom Cruise made sure that her big day would be one she would never forget.
As the curtains fell during Holmes' Thursday night performance of the Broadway revival of Arthur Miller's All My Sons, the cast and crew presented her with a custom-made birthday cake on Cruise's request, according to People.
Holmes' costar, John Lithgow, addressed the audience, announcing, "Tom Cruise, our good friend, devoted fan to the show, doting husband of Katie, could not be here tonight. He's heartsick that he couldn't be here ... but he wanted to make his presence felt. So, he's joining us, inviting all of you, to celebrate Katie's birthday."
A five-tiered, white-frosted cake was then wheeled out as the crowd cheered for the birthday girl. Daughter Suri was then brought on stage, and the mother and daughter blew out the candles together.
Cruise, who was in Los Angeles to for the premiere of his new film, Valkyrie, told People he had "planned it so that when she comes out for the standing ovation, John [would] get the whole audience to wish her a happy birthday."
A very surprised Holmes thanked her audience, saying, "Thank you for coming out to the show tonight. It was a real pleasure," before the cast and crew disappeared backstage to enjoy the cake and champagne, courtesy of Cruise.
