Kathie Lee Puts Her Foot in Her Mouth by Asking Martin Short About His Dead Wife

Kathie Lee Gifford

We've seen uncomfortable things happen on live TV before, but this just may be one of the most cringe-worthy moments in recent Today Show memory.

During an interview with Martin Short on the fourth hour of Today Wednesday, host Kathie Lee Gifford asked the actor about his wife. "And he and Nancy have got one of the greatest marriages of anybody in show business. How many years now for you guys?"

Problem is, Short's wife, Nancy Dolman, died two years ago after reportedly battling cancer. (The cause of her death was never made public.) Clearly caught off-guard, Short answered," We... uh... married 36 years."

During a later segment, Gifford realized the gaffe and issued an on-air apology. ""I feel so badly ... my apologies to him and his family," she said.
