Judge Judy

District Attorney Adam Levy, who's the son of Judge Judy star Judith Sheindlin, is suing a local sheriff in New York for $5 million, claiming that the sheriff interfered in a child rape case.

In the lawsuit against County Sheriff Donald Smith, Levy described Smith as "an out-of-control sheriff who doesn't care about the truth," The Associated Press reports.

Smith alleged that Levy had "ongoing and inappropriate involvement" in the case against Levy's close friend and former personal trainer,Alexandru Hossu, who is accused of raping a 13-year-old girl and has pleaded not guilty. Levy maintains that he recused himself from the case upon hearing that Hossu was involved, according to the AP.

"Mr. Levy's comments and actions would seem to suggest that, if he could have his own way, Mr. Hossu would never have been brought to justice for his crime and Mr. Levy's relationship with him would never have been brought to the light of public scrutiny," Smith, who is running for re-election in November, said in a statement in March.

Defense attorneys are looking to have the case against Hossu dismissed, according to the AP.

Sheindlin weighed in on the issue this week. "His moral compass is dead center," she said in a statement, the AP reports. "When someone attacks his character professionally or personally they best be prepared to back it up — shut up — or pay up."
