Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman: The Hoax Continues?

Joaquin Phoenix

Joaquin Phoenix's Andy Kaufman-esque career suicide tour just keeps getting weirder.

The actor, who recently announced he was giving up his on-screen career to become a rapper, made a squirm-inducing appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman Wednesday to promote his new — and last, to hear Phoenix tell it — movie, Two Lovers.

Dressed in a suit, shades, and a beard Letterman likened to the Unabomber's, Phoenix chewed gum while fidgeting through Dave's questions, rarely giving more than one-sentence answers. Phoenix later seemed to become agitated with the audience for laughing at his befuddlement.

When Phoenix refused to set up a clip from the film, Letterman finally said, "Yeah, I'll come to your house and chew gum." Phoenix's response: slapping the wad under Dave's desk.

Watch all the awkwardness below. Do you think this is the continuation of the suspected — but continuously denied — hoax? Or has Phoenix set up permanent residence in crazytown?
