Jessie's titular hero is going to break ground when she becomes the first Disney Channel character to get engaged.
Jessie (Debby Ryan), 22, will accept her boyfriend Brooks' (Pierson Fode) proposal at the end of a four-episode arc concluding in the fall.
"Jessie is an adult, and we felt we could tackle this in a way that still feels appropriate for our audience," Adam Bonnett, Disney Channel executive vice president of original programing, told The Associated Press.
Bubble shows: Which will survive?
Ryan says that Jessie's decision isn't out of step with the reality of young twentysomethings, but that making such a commitment is a "delicate" topic for Jessie to handle when so many young viewers look to her character for guidance. "Your principal character is deciding whether or not she should start her life with a man," she says.
"Our audience isn't dealing with somebody proposing to them, but they are dealing with choices they have to make in their life, and thinking things through, following their heart and wanting to make the right choice," Bennett adds.
As for what happens once Jessie prepares to say "I do," Ryan says, "It's not about the dress, it's not about the wedding. It's about the marriage. That's something we lose sight of when we're so young and all we want to do is dress up and play fairytale."
