Jeremy Renner's upcoming appearance in Tom Cruise's fourth Mission: Impossible film may be the first of several.

Renner, who received an Oscar nomination for his role in The Hurt Locker, told MTV News that the producers of Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol might be grooming him as Cruise's replacement. "It's a franchise to potentially take over," Renner said. "I can't predict the future and what they want, but that's certainly the idea."

The 39-year-old actor, who also recently starred alongside Ben Affleck in The Town, did not elaborate on whether Cruise's character might pass the torch in the upcoming film or a future installment.

"I can't really go into the details of the script, because that's still evolving," he said. "It's Tom's baby. He's the engine behind the thing. What happens after that, we'll see."
