Aubrey Peebles, Hayley Kiyoko
Ready for some truly, truly outrageous casting news? The secret of who will be playing Jem and the Holograms is out, and it's coming straight out of Nashville.
Aubrey Peeples, who currently stars as reality-show brat Layla Grant on the countrified ABC soap, will play Jem in the live-action Jem and the Holograms movie, the film's official Tumblr announced today. Joining her in the band will be A.N.T. Farm's Stefanie Scott as Jem's keyboardist sister Kimber, Pretty Little Liars' Aurora Perrineau as drummer Shana, and The Fosters' Hayley Kiyoko as guitarist Aja.
Celebrity alter egos
Girls of the '80s will remember Jem, an animated series that ran from 1985 to 1988 that was based on a Hasbro toy line. In the show, Jem was the alter ego of Jerrica Benton, who possessed high-tech earrings that could alter her appearance and those of her friends. So of course they used the technology to form an all-girl band.
The updated movie will follow an orphaned teenage girl who ascends to pop stardom. And it may teach kids these days a lesson. It will reportedly tackle the issue of staying true to yourself in this day and age of social media. (The original Jem never had to deal with that.)
