Molina died in his Indianapolis home of "natural causes," though some reports say he died of organ failure from alcohol abuse.

As a solo artist, Molina created the bands Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co. for which he'd enlist other musicians for individual projects as needed. He had released over a dozen albums with the bands.

"Jason is the cornerstone of Secretly Canadian," read a statement on the label's website. "Without him there would be no us — plain and simple. His singular, stirring body of work is the foundation upon which all else has been constructed... We're going to miss Jason. He was generous. He was a one of a kind. And he had a voice unlike any other."
