When the actor appeared at the Gotham Awards in New York City, he showed off an extreme makeover that's quite the eyebrow raiser. Or at least it would be, if he had any eyebrows left!

The actor has shaved off his furry friends and lost a startling amount of weight to play a transsexual woman battling Aids in Dallas Buyers Club. Leto's co-star Matthew McConaughey has also undergone a transformation, dropping at least 30 pounds for his role as a heterosexual man who's HIV positive.

At the event, Leto told Vulture that he hoped his recent fasting would have benefits beyond a more feminine physique. "Historically, people have done it for pursuit of self, to achieve a meditative state, so I'm hoping for that, and not the other things," Leto said. "It's not necessarily a bad thing."
