James Carville and Mary Matalin Leaving CNN

James Carville and Mary Matalin

Longtime CNN contributors James Carville and Mary Matalin are leaving the network, TVGuide.com has confirmed.

The married couple first appeared on CNN as co-hosts of Crossfire, which ran until 2005, before becoming news analysts.

CNN didn't give a reason behind Carville's and Matalin's departures, but Carville told Politico that the decision was the network's. "I was told that they wanted the contributors to be more available -- essentially, closer to Washington. I'm not always available; I don't live there," Carville, a New Orleans resident, explained.

Though the politically polarizing couple might not be leaving on their own will, Carville isn't one to hold a grudge. "I'm completely cool with it," he said.

This isn't the only major change at CNN. Carville's and Matalin's departures came the same day as managing editor Mark Whitaker's resignation over differences with new CNN President Jeff Zucker. Political contributor Erick Erickson also left the network for Fox News.

Since Zucker was appointed in November, CNN has hired a bevy of new faces, including ABC's Chris Cuomo and Jake Tapper.
