Jack Hanlon, Child Actor in Our Gang Movies, Dies at 96

Jack Hanlon

Jack Hanlon, the child actor who starred in 1920s films including The General and two Our Gang movies, has died. He was 96.

Hanlon died Thursday of old age in an assisted living facility in Las Vegas, his niece, Wendy Putnam Park, told The Associated Press. He had recently moved into the facility after suffering a stroke.

"He loved talking about being in the movies if you brought the subject up," Park said. "He loved sharing stories about being in them."

After getting his big break at age 10 opposite Buster Keaton in 1926's The General, Hanlon starred in two Our Gang/Little Rascals shorts, The Glorious Fourth and Olympic Games. He also acted alongside Clark Gable in Big Money (1920) and Greta Garbo in Romance (1930). He retired from acting at age 16 and later became an Army paratrooper and a mover for Allied Van Lines.

Hanlon was married to his wife, Jean, for 37 years until her death in 1977. Jean's sister, Maude, later became his companion until her death 10 years ago, according to The Las Vegas Sun.

Besides Park, Hanlon is survived by two other nieces and a nephew.
