Ja Rule Sentenced to Prison in Gun Case

Rapper Ja Rule was sentenced Wednesday to serve up to two years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted criminal weapon possession in December, The Associated Press reports.

Ja Rule , whose real name is Jeffrey Atkins, will begin his sentence Tuesday.

"See y'all later," he told family and friends in the courtroom as he was handcuffed after his sentencing. He will have a brief stay in a city jail before he is transferred to a state prison that is yet to be determined. He could serve just 18 months for the gun conviction if he meets requirements for good behavior and other standards.

Ja Rule also faces up to three years in federal prison for a $3 million tax evasion charge. He pleaded guilty in March and is scheduled to be sentenced on Monday. However, his lawyer Stacey Richman, said that will most likely be pushed back to later in the summer.

The rapper, who has sold 20 million albums worldwide, is best known for hit songs like "Always on Time" and "Between Me and You." His new album, Pain Is Love 2 (a follow-up to his Grammy-nominated 2001 record) is due out later this summer.
