She's got nothing but man trouble! Brit actress Indira Varma — best known as the doomed wife Niobe in Rome — stars in BBC America's twisted crime series Luther (premiering Sunday, 10/9c), where she plays Zoe Luther, a top-flight attorney who is emotionally terrorized by her detective husband (Idris Elba). Varma is also joining the cast of Fox's Human Target (returning 11/17) as filthy-rich philanthropist Ilsa Pucci, a gig that finds her playing boss to the show's three morally dubious security guys.
"Luther got quite snooty reviews in the U.K.," notes Varma. "Because of Idris, they were unfairly comparing it to The Wire and saying Americans do it better. By Episode 3, they loved it so much they were going insane!"
As for the dude-centric Target, Varma says, "It really needed a burst of estrogen. Ilsa is not some fluttery-eyed damsel in distress. These macho guys have to answer to her and they resent it." Still, might love bloom for her and Christopher Chance (Mark Valley)? Says Varma: "They're certainly going to tease it."
