House of Cards Trailer: Is This the First Great Streaming Series?

Kevin Spacey

Netflix is ready to play with the big boys! In addition to the spring 2013 revival of Arrested Development, the online streaming service will also air David Fincher's latest project House of Cards. From the looks of the first trailer, the project seems to have what it takes to compete with any one of cable's acclaimed dramas.

Produced by Media Rights Capital, the series stars Kevin Spacey as ambitious Congressman Frank Underwood, who is willing to do whatever it takes to get ahead. Robin Wright plays Underwood's wife, a woman who appears to take more cues from Lady Macbeth than Michelle Obama. Kate Mara takes on the pivotal role of a newspaper reporter whom Underwood uses to attack his enemies as he climbs the D.C. ladder.

The first trailer for the series feels more like a preview for a movie than a television series, let alone a show that won't even air on TV. And unlike other stream-only series, House of Cards boasts exceptional production values and all-star cast. Fincher's dark aesthetic matches perfectly with the passively sinister nature of its lead, making us think already that thirteen episodes won't be enough of the political drama!

And if the trailer is a good measure of the series, House of Cards not only has what it takes to become the first truly great streaming series but also give Homeland a serious run for its money as the best D.C. drama on-air.

House of Cards will be released in its entirety on Feb. 1, 2013 on Netflix. Watch the trailer below. Will you tune in?
