The Hobbit Breaks December Box Office Record

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey broke the December opening weekend record, but failed to reach the $100 million mark.

The Lord of the Rings prequel grossed an estimated $84.7 million, Box Office Mojo reports. No other new releases opened against the film, which left Rise of the Guardians to stay perched at the No. 2 spot with $7.4 million. Lincoln rose to the third spot with $7.2 million.

At fourth place, Skyfall grabbed $7 million. Life of Pi completed the top 5 with $5.4 million.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2 claimed the No. 6 spot with $5.1 million. In seventh place, Wreck-It Ralph drew $3.2 million.

Rounding out the top 10: Playing for Keeps (No. 8, $3.2 million), Red Dawn (No. 9, $2.3 million) and Silver Linings Playbook (No. 10, $2.0 million).
