AMC Back on Board for Second Season of Hell on Wheels

Anson Mount

AMC has renewed Hell on Wheels for a second season, Deadline reports.

The post-Civil War drama, about a Confederate soldier (Anson Mount) who sets out to get revenge on the Union soldiers who killed his wife, was the cable network's second-biggest series premiere ever behind the zombie drama The Walking Dead. The show opened to 4.4 million viewers back in November.

Hell on Wheels has dipped in viewership since its debut, but the most recent episode grabbed 2.3 million viewers. The show's renewal continues AMC's successful streak with original series in recent years. (The only exception, the conspiracy theory drama Rubicon, was axed after only one season last year).

Created by Joe and Tony Gayton, the drama also stars Common, Dominique McElligott and Colm Meaney.

Hell on Wheels airs Sundays at 10/9c on AMC.
