Many TV dramas create mysteries in their freshmen seasons that take years to resolve. The producers of CBS' Hawaii Five-0 are taking a slightly different approach.
Finale Preview: Get scoop on 39 season-enders
In Monday's season finale (10/9c, CBS) McGarrett (Alex O'Loughlin), Danno (Scott Caan) and the team will find answers to many of the questions surrounding the toolbox of clues McGarrett found after his father's death, including the connection to international terrorist Wo Fat (Mark Dacascos).
"We played the 'champ box' over the course of the first season, and it feels like we have to come to some kind of resolution with it," executive producer Peter Lenkov tells TVGuide.com. "It'll feel odd for two guys who are investigators to not be able to discover what those clues are. They can solve all these other crimes but not answer the questions right in front of them? But I think with everything that's answered, there's going to be a new question posed."
But digging into that past is a risky proposition for McGarrett, especially since Wo Fat has already given McGarrett a warning. "McGarrett is not letting go of that bone," Lenkov says. "He is continually trying to get that information and pursuing Wo Fat, and that makes him finally surface. Wo Fat decides he's got to be a little more proactive with how he deals with McGarrett."

That's bad news for McGarrett and those closest to him, including teammates Chin Ho (Daniel Dae Kim) and Kono (Grace Park) as well as Gov. Jameson and one of her aides (returning guest stars Jean Smart and Kelly Hu). "It's sort of our all-star episode because everybody who started with us is coming back," Lenkov says. "Because it's very heavy in mythology, it requires a lot of those characters to be back in the picture. They all have one thing in mind: They want to get Wo Fat.
"But the finale isn't necessarily a manhunt," Lenkov continues. "There is a murder, and so there's definitely a mystery element to the show that we always have. It just happens to involve one of our people very personally and very directly."
Indeed, one of the show's characters will fall — and McGarrett may be to blame. As you can see in the clip below, his obsession with this case drives him to operate outside the law. "The governor can only protect him so much," Lenkov says. "McGarrett is a guy who goes to extremes. He's going go further than he's gone all season and he's going to be very reckless.
"It's going to end and your jaw's going to be on the floor," Lenkov adds. "It really is a shocker. I'm probably not doing myself any favors because it sounds like I'm overhyping it, but ... it's going to be a great reward. We're really going to pay off a lot of stuff we set up. And it's really got a great twist at the end."
Hawaii Five-0's Season 1 finale airs Monday at 10/9c on CBS.
