HBO Cancels Enlightened After Two Seasons

Laura Dern

HBO has canceled critical darling Enlightened after two seasons, Buzzfeed reports.

TV Scorecard: What's renewed? What's canceled?

The dark comedy, starring Laura Dern, struggled in the ratings for both seasons, but had earned a loyal following. Created by Mike White, the series followed Amy (Dern), a self-destructive ex-executive who tries to get her life back together after a nervous breakdown at work and a stint in rehab.

Enlightened narrowly escaped cancellation after its first season. However, shortly after Dern picked up the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy Series, the pay cable network granted Enlightened a second season while canceling comedies Bored to Death, How to Make It in America and Hung. For its second season, HBO moved the show to Sunday and paired it with buzzy hit Girls.
