George Michael Sentenced to Eight Weeks in Jail

George Michael was sentenced to eight weeks in jail after pleading guilty to driving under the influence of drugs, The Associated Press reports.

"It does not appear that you took proper steps to deal with what is clearly an addiction to cannabis," Judge John Perkins told Michael in a London court Tuesday. "That's a mistake which puts you and, on this occasion, the public at risk."

Michael, 47, pleaded guilty to driving under the influence in July after he crashed his car into a store in North London.

Michaels will serve four weeks of the sentence in prison and the rest on parole, Perkins said. In addition to jail time, the former Wham! singer will lose his license for five years and must pay a fine of 1,250 pounds ($1,930).

This was not Michaels' first run-in with the law. He was arrested in 1998 in a public restroom on a  lewd conduct charge. After pleading "no contest," he was fined and sentenced to community service. In 2008, he was arrested in a London bathroom on suspicion of drug possession, but was released with a warning.
