Gayle King Leaves OWN for CBS' Early Show Revamp

Gayle King is teaming with Charlie Rose and Erica Hill for CBS' new morning program that will replace The Early Show, the network officially announced Tuesday. Unfortunately for Winfrey's fledgling cable network, it means the end of King's The Gayle King Show, which has aired on OWN since the network's launch in 2010.

OWN and Harpo presidents Sheri Salata and Erik Logan, however, are leaving the door open for her return. "We are so happy for Gayle's opportunity of a lifetime," the network said in a statement. "She'll be a fantastic host for the new morning show on CBS and we wish her all the best. Although her show will not continue on OWN, we look forward to her joining us from time-to-time as her schedule allows."
As for CBS's new morning show, the new two-hour format is expected to go against the grain of competitors Good Morning America and Today and emphasize hard news while also utilizing a conversational approach a la ABC's The View. It will debut Monday, Jan. 9, broadcasting live from the CBS Broadcast Center in New York City in a new, state-of-the-art studio. John Miller, Rebecca Jarvis and Jeff Glor will serve as correspondents.
This new direction for The Early Show is the program's second major shake-up in less than a year. Last November, Harry Smith, Julie Chen, Maggie Rodriguez and Dave Price were reassigned from the morning shift.
