Gabrielle Union

It ain't easy Being Mary Jane. Tonight on the hot BET sudser, the romance between TV news anchor Mary Jane Paul (Gabrielle Union) and her married lover, Andre (Omari Hardwick), explodes when he discovers a photo of her looking cozy with ex-beau David (Stephen Bishop) at a charity gala. Union serves up the dish.

TV Guide Magazine: Is it over between Mary Jane and Andre? And if not, why not? They're doomed, right?
Gabrielle Unio
n: Mary Jane is mad! Andre's now living with her, but he's still having sex with his wife, so where the hell does he get off? [Laughs] We had to shoot that scene over and over, because there were too many angry ad-libs flying out of my mouth — stuff the censors would never let fly. Of course, when Andre gets in his car to leave her, Mary Jane's like, "No! Wait! I'm sorry!" She's hopeless.

TV Guide Magazine: Why is your character such a loser at love when she's such a great catch?
Union:
She is a great catch...on paper. She's got the supercool job, the gorgeous house, the Porsche. But she can't stop sampling these men who are no good for her. It's like going to HomeTown Buffet and saying, "Oooh, that casserole looks amazing!" Then you put a bunch on your plate and it sucks. So you throw it away and try something else. Everything looks great, but looks can be deceiving.

TV Guide Magazine: Is she capable of ever finding true happiness?
Union:
Not until she knows what she really, really wants — and I've been there. When I got divorced, my life coach said, "Write down what makes you happy." And all I could think to put on my list was "Ground beef. Imitation crab. Beer." My coach was like, "Why in hell did you ever get married if you don't know what you want?" So I can relate. And so, sadly, do a lot of other Mary Janes out there!

Being Mary Jane airs Tuesdays at 10/9c on BET.
