Exclusive: Discovery Channel Revs Up New Series Machines of Glory

Discovery Channel is heading to the construction site for its next testosterone-fueled series. The cable network just picked up Machines of Glory, a new competition show that pits three crews of machine operators against each other in a series of hardhat battles.
Crews will compete in various challenges while operating heavy machinery such as excavators, backhoes and skid steers. They'll be tested in three areas of ability: speed, skill and power. After three rounds, one team will be eliminated and the two finalists will go head-to-head in a challenge that involves all three machines. Winners will receive a cash prize and bragging rights.
Johnny Littlefield (Extreme Makeover: Home Edition) is host. Discovery has ordered three episodes of Machines of Glory, which will bow in March (the network has not yet determined a firm airdate).
"This Discovery show is a dream come true for us and anyone who played with their trucks in the sandbox when they were little," says executive producer Scott Hallock. Hallock Healey Entertainment (Scare Tactics) is the production company behind the show.
Discovery continues to do extremely well with gritty, manly shows. The network of American Chopper, World's Toughest Trucker and Deadliest Catch is currently dominating Friday nights with its hit series Gold Rush and Bering Sea Gold.
Last Friday, episode 14 of Gold Rush was the No. 1 show in all of TV in primetime, beating every broadcast and cable program in adults 18-49. The show also delivered 4.9 million viewers and ended the week as the top-rated cable program in viewers and adults 18-49. Bering Sea Gold was the No. 2 show in viewers and adults 18-49. Both shows are up double digits in key demos verse last year at this time.
