Is Syfy ready to leave Eureka?

The cable network has ordered an abbreviated six-episode sixth season of the series, according to Deadline.com, which also reports that the shortened season will be the show's last. However, Mark Stern, Syfy's president of original content told The Hollywood Reporter there are no such plans to end the show.

"[Producers] Bruce Miller and Jaime Paglia have brought a creative vitality to Eureka that has kept it fresh and inventive," Stern said in a statement. "Although we do not have a commitment beyond six episodes for the sixth season, we are hopeful that this will not be the end of the franchise."

Eureka is currently airing its fourth season on Syfy while production on Season 5 continues. The cast and crew will wrap the current season this month and will then report back to set in October for Season 6, according to Deadline.

Starring Colin Ferguson and Salli Richardson-Whitfield, Eureka is set in a fictional Oregonian town of the same name, which is inhabited primarily by geniuses and scientists. The second half of Season 4 premiered last month to more than 2 million viewers.

Syfy did not immediately respond to TVGuide.com's request for comment.
