Former Survivor castaways are teaming up for the ultimate alliance: to eliminate cancer. The CBS reality show has joined Stand Up 2 Cancer to form a fundraising team for this year's SU2C Team Challenge. The movement is being led by Survivor: Africa winner Ethan Zohn, who embodies the spirit of a true survivor after being diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma last year.
"That word 'survivor' holds so much meaning in my life," Zohn tells TV Guide Magazine. "Survivor is a game that touches upon every part of you as a human being, but we all know that cancer is not just a game."
Zohn is being joined by a variety of Survivor personalities, including Rob Mariano, Colby Donaldson and Parvati Shallow, to help raise $25,000 by September 1.
"It just proves how much of a family we are," says Zohn. "We lost a dear friend of ours, Jenn Lyon [from Survivor: Palau] to cancer [in January], so it's the perfect time to get everyone together to create this campaign."
Survivor's team will be the first Stand Up 2 Cancer team sponsored by a reality television show, but Zohn says his connection with the organization is much more personal.
"I had a stem cell transplant where I was locked in isolation for 30 days and relied heavily on science and modern medicine," says Zohn. "If it wasn't for organizations like Stand up to Cancer that raise money to create these new therapies, I don't know where I'd be right now."
This year's Stand Up 2 Cancer telecast will air live on Friday, September 10 at 8 pm/ET on all major networks.
