Is a Downton Abbey Prequel in the Works?

Julian Fellowes

Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes says he plans to write a prequel to the beloved British period drama, the BBC reports.

Fellowes, who won an Oscar for penning the screenplay to Gosford Park, said during a screenwriters' lecture at the British Academy Film and Television Academy that the prequel will explore how Hugh Bonneville's and Elizabeth McGovern's characters, the Earl and Countess of Grantham, met.

"They had a slightly troubled courtship, because she was in love with him before they married, as we know, and he married her entirely for her money," he said.

Though Fellowes has only announced plans for the prequel to come out in book form, a television adaptation is likely, according to the BBC. However, Fellowes said he wouldn't want the prequel to air until Downton Abbey had ended.
