"It's about time," executive producer Steven Moffat
said in a statement. "Technology has finally caught up with Doctor Who
and your television is now bigger on the inside. A whole new dimension of adventure for the Doctor to explore."
The anniversary special is expected to air on Nov. 23 in the U.K., the same day Whovians were first introduced to the Doctor in 1963.
The Doctor Who
reboot will wrap up its seventh season on BBC and BBC America on March 30.
