Disney Renews Wizards, Plans TV Movie

Selena Gomez, Wizards of Waverly Place

Is Selena Gomez the next Miley Cyrus? Disney sure hopes so.

The network has renewed Gomez's series, Wizards of Waverly Place, for a third season and has green-lit a telefilm for it as well, following in the footsteps of its predecessor, Hannah Montana.

No word on when Season 3 will arrive, but the TV film, Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie, will premiere in August. The film will follow Gomez's Alex Russo and her siblings as they vacation at the Caribbean resort where their parents met.

If successful, the Wizards movie could launch third a tween franchise for Disney, after Hannah and High School Musical.

"This is a great example of how we can groom our stars across different genres on different platforms," said Gary Marsh, president of entertainment for Disney Channels Worldwide.

Gomez is already getting the main-star treatment at Disney: She has another original movie, Princess Protection Program, premiering on the network this summer.
