Disney Junior has ordered a sequel series to The Lion King, the network announced Tuesday.
The Lion Guard will tell the story of Kion, the second-born son of Simba and Nala, who leads a ragtag group tasked with protecting the Pride Lands. The animated project follows not only the 1994 hit movie, but it's two sequels, 1998's The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride and 2004's The Lion King 1½.
25 totally unnecessary spin-offs
Executive-produced by Ford Riley, The Lion Guard will first launch as a television movie before airing as a series, which will also be overseen by the wildlife education experts at Disney's Animal Kingdom.
Riley's other credits include Special Agent Oso, The Land Before Time series and the 1995 Lion King spin-off series Timon & Pumbaa.
The Lion Guard movie will premiere in Fall 2015 and the series will debut in early 2016.
