Report: Debra Messing to Headline NBC's Musical Pilot

Will and Grace alum Debra Messing is eyeing a return to NBC with the hour-long musical pilot, Smash, Deadline.com reports.

Based on an idea by Steven Spielberg, Smash follows a group of people who come together to put on a Broadway show about Marilyn Monroe. Messing is in talks to play lyricist Julia, who works alongside the show's gay musical composer. That role has not yet been cast.
Dreamworks TV is producing the pilot, and playwright Theresa Rebeck wrote the script.
NBC declined to comment on the report.
