Dean Winters

Bad news for Bensidy! It looks like Law & Order: SVU'Dean Winters is moving on.

Winters has been cast in a lead role for the anticipated Vince Gilligan-David Shore CBS drama Battle Creek, Deadline.com reports. The project, which was given a straight-to-series 13-episode order, is about the partnership of a detective (Winters) and an FBI agent with very different world views. Winters' character, Detective Russ Agnew, is described as a smart, tough, impatient, and pragmatic guy who gets results but with whom no one wants to partner.

Also joining the project are Aubrey Dollar (666 Park) and Edward Fordham Jr. Dollar will play Holly, the office manager who shares mutual attraction with Russ, while Fordham Jr. plays chubby detective Aaron Funkhauser. They join Kal Penn, who plays another detective who has reservations about the incoming FBI agent, and Janet McTeer, Russ' superior and the commander of the Battle Creek Police Department.

House's Shore will executive-produce the project with Breaking Bad's Gilligan, who wrote the pilot back in 2002.

Winters currently recurs on SVU as Detective Cassidy, an ex-member of the squad who's also the boyfriend to Sergeant Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay). Although it's the first time the long-running series has explored Benson's romantic life, an impending breakup seems likely.
