Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight
A-listers reigned supreme at the 35th Annual People's Choice Awards Wednesday night at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
The Dark Knight continued to make an impact this award season by nabbing five trophies, including Favorite Movie and Favorite Action Movie. Batman himself, Christian Bale, was named Favorite Superhero and was also recognized, along with the late Heath Ledger, in the Favorite On-Screen Match-up category.
Also awarded in the film categories were Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who were missing in action from the ceremony. Pitt was named Favorite Leading Man, while Jolie was voted Favorite Female Action star.
Will Smith was a double winner, nabbing Favorite Male Movie Star and Favorite Male Action Star, while Reese Witherspoon was named Favorite Female Movie Star.
Ellen DeGeneres presented the first award of the night, filling in for Kate Hudson whom, she said, was stuck in traffic and "40 minutes away." DeGeneres quipped, "That's no way to sell a movie." Later, DeGeneres picked up her own award for Favorite Talk Show Host.
Hudson did arrive in time to collect her award for Favorite Leading Lady, while Katherine Heigl picked up a trophy for Favorite Comedy Movie for 27 Dresses. Secret Life of Bees and Wall-E took home Favorite Drama Movie and Favorite Family Movie honors respectively.
Top television honors went to House and Two and Half Men with Hugh Laurie and Christina Applegate winning Favorite Male and Female TV star. Cancer-survivor Applegate accepted her award by thanking fans for their support. "The incredible amount of love and support you've given me over the last few months hasn't gone unnoticed — and it's really needed," she said.
Ratings darling The Mentalist snagged the Favorite New TV Drama trophy.
The People clearly adore Carrie Underwood as well. The American Idol Season 4 winner and now successful country crooner cleaned up at the ceremony, winning three trophies.
In other music news, Chris Brown was named Favorite Male Singer. He also nabbed Favorite Combined Forces with Jordin Sparks for their song "No Air."
