Dane Cook Calls Joke About Dark Knight Rises Shooting a "Bad Judgment Call"

Comedian Dane Cook apologized Friday after he used the Aurora, Colo. Dark Knight Rises massacre as material in his stand-up comedy act Thursday night at the Laugh Factory in Hollywood.

"I don't know if you've seen the movie, but the movie's pretty much a piece of crap," Cook told the audience Thursday. "Yeah, spoiler alert. ... I'm pretty sure that somebody in that theater about 25 minutes in, realizing it was a piece of crap, probably was like, 'Ugh, f------ shoot me.'"

After video of his act hit the web early Friday, Cook addressed the negative comments his joke had received. "I am devastated by the recent tragedy in Colorado and did not mean to make light of what happened," he wrote on Twitter. "I made a bad judgment call with my material last night and regret making a joke at such a sensitive time. My heart goes out to all of the families & friends of the victims."

The crack comes less than a week after the shooting, in which 12 people were killed and dozens more wounded at a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises on its opening day. Based on a recording of the set, the joke was met with tepid laughter and a few groans from the audience.

Cook stars in the new NBC comedy Next Caller, which will premiere midseason.
