Showtime Taps Cox, Whalley for Two New Series

Showtime has cast Brian Cox and Joanne Whalley in two upcoming series, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Cox, 64, will recur on The Big C as the father of Laura Linney's character. The Big C, which premieres Aug. 16, chronicles a woman's emotional ups and downs while battling cancer. Cox joins previously announced recurring guest stars Gabourey Sidibe and Idris Elba.

Whalley has been tapped for the female lead in the Renaissance drama The Borgias. The 48—year-old actress will portray Vanossa, the matriarch of the infamous Borgias. Jeremy Irons was previously cast to play patriarch, and one-time pope, Rodrigo Borgia.

The Borgias, which will replace The Tudors, debuts next year.
