Adult Swim's China, IL is an online success story, having started out as a web series created by Brad Neely before moving to TV. The show centers on a wide variety of characters created and voiced by Neely, including The Professor Brothers and Baby Cakes, and takes place at what's deemed the "Worst College in America." Other stars include Hulk Hogan as the school's dean, Jeffrey Tambor as Professor Cakes and Dave Coulier as Ronald Reagan. China, IL, which airs Sundays at 11:30/10:30c, expanded to 30-minute episodes for Season 2 (now underway). Neely and fellow executive producer Daniel Weidenfeld took the TV Guide Magazine showrunner survey to explain why viewers should enroll in China, IL.
TV Guide Magazine: I've got room in my life to watch one more show. Why should it be yours?
Brad Neely: Our show will make the room in your life seem larger. We tell three stories in 30 minutes. We expand you (non-sexually).
TV Guide Magazine: Who should be watching?
Neely: People who love happiness and hate sadness. People who want to fight off death.
TV Guide Magazine: What happens if we don't watch your show?
Neely: Your friends will hate the sound of your joy.
TV Guide Magazine: Give us an equation for your show.
Daniel Weidenfeld: Monsters Inc. meets Red Shoe Diaries. Or Seinfeld plus South Park multiplied by The Simpsons, then divided by Ancient Aliens.
TV Guide Magazine: What's the best thing anyone has said or written about your show?
Neely: That we are working in the tradition of South Park and The Simpsons.
TV Guide Magazine: What's the worst thing?
Neely: That I am working in a tradition.
TV Guide Magazine: Who was right?
Neely: There is no right, only Zuul.
TV Guide Magazine: What's an alternate title for your show?
Neely: Honkey Time. Wait. That's weird. And wrong. It's The Worst School In America. Not the honkey thing.
TV Guide Magazine: Come up with a premise for the spin-off.
Weidenfeld: Pony and Steve end up lost out in space. It's all done in 3D.
TV Guide Magazine: What credit of yours would you prefer we forget?
Neely: Brad Neely as Himself in That One Thing.
TV Guide Magazine: Tell me something about your amazing cast.
Neely: Hulk Hogan and Greta Gerwig are in this show.
TV Guide Magazine: If you weren't producing this, what series would you most like to be an executive producer on?
Neely: Honkey Time.
TV Guide Magazine: Let's scare the network. Tell us an idea that didn't make it on to the screen.
Weidenfeld: An all-nude episode.
TV Guide Magazine: Finish this sentence: "If you like _______, you'll love our show."
Neely: Puke, blood, feces and alcohol.
TV Guide Magazine: Pick another show, any show, and start a fake feud.
Neely: Hey, Ghost Adventures. I want to die in your arms tonight.
TV Guide Magazine: With what show would you like to do a crossover episode and how would that go?
Weidenfeld: I'd love to do a crossover with Seinfeld. Put them in our animated world. And put our characters in their live-action world. Let's see who would survive the longest.
TV Guide Magazine: How will your show change the face of TV as we know it?
Neely: We're already wearing that face like Hannibal Lecter.
