Cheers & Jeers: Men of a Certain Age's Ray of Hope

Ray Romano

The standup-turned-sitcom star has matured into an impressive dramatic actor as beleaguered party-store owner Joe Tranelli on TNT's sophomore drama. As Joe dips his toes back into the dating pool and deals with his anxious teenage son (the remarkable Braeden Lemasters), Romano brings subtlety and wit to a deceptively complicated role.

TNT's dramedy took some time to find its voice in its first season, but with a trio of Emmy-winning Everybody Loves Raymond vets (Tucker Cawley, Lew Schneider and cocreator Mike Royce) now on the writing staff, the show is settling into a pleasingly seriocomic tone. Now if someone could just craft a life-after-Til Death comeback vehicle for Romano's old costar Brad Garrett: Big & Tall Men of a Certain Age?
