Cheers & Jeers: Itzhak Perlman Gets Back to His Roots

Itzhak Perlman

Cheers to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon for creating the year's most delightful musical mashup: Itzhak Perlman and the Roots.

The Israeli-American violin virtuoso and Philly's legendary neo-soul/hip-hop crew might seem like an unlikely combination, but they blended beautifully on Friday night's episode of NBC's giddily inventive talk show. Perlman hammed it up hilariously during Fallon's trademark "Thank You Notes" bit (soon to become a book!), and drummer Questlove & Co. jammed deliriously with him on classic tunes like "Stormy Weather" coming in and out of commercial breaks.

And it was all for a good cause: Perlman was on hand to promote his campaign to wipe out polio — of which he is a survivor — in the four countries where it remains: Nigeria, India, Afghanistan and Pakistan. (Go to rotary.org for more information.)  And thus, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon proves you can do good comedy and do good.

What did you think of Itzhak Perlman's gig with the Roots?
