Fox's sophomore sleeper may seem like a mindless action show on the surface, but dig a little deeper and you'll find one of network TV's best-written, produced and acted dramas. The ensemble, led by the impossibly charming Mark Valley as bodyguard Christopher Chance, has seamlessly added two females this season: Janet Montgomery as plucky thief Ames and the delightful Indira Varma as imperious employer Ilsa Pucci. Meanwhile, Chi McBride and Jackie Earle Haley continue to elevate the material with Emmy-caliber support as Chance's cohorts, ex-cop Winston and mysterious mercenary Guerrero.

This week's typically excellent episode, "Dead Head," featured a stellar guest turn by Roger Bart (Desperate Housewives' psycho pharmacist George) as a money launderer suffering from amnesia whom Chance & Co. tried to protect from a crooked cop (the always-charismatic Nick Chinlund) who'd clashed with Winston earlier. We uncovered a bit more of Winston's past when he consulted his heretofore unseen ex-wife (Cold Case alum Tracie Thoms) on the case. With enjoyably solid hours like this one, Human Target deserves to find a ratings sweet spot.
