The Oscar-nominated Terms of Endearment costar has worked infrequently in recent years, which makes her the perfect choice to play a stage diva who's making a comeback after a long time out of the spotlight on the new season of Gabriel Byrne's HBO shrink-rap serial (starting October 25). Aside from a guest gig as a school principal on the final season of Law & Order and her role as the mother of the titular bride in 2008's Rachel Getting Married, Winger hasn't been seen on screen for the past half-decade. But she hits her stride immediately and establishes a enjoyably combustible chemistry with Byrne.

Maybe Winger saw how much fun her real-life husband, Arliss Howard, had as a gay intelligence operative on AMC's Rubicon and decided to get in on the cable-drama game.
