CBS' hit procedural dispensed with its usual serial-killer-of-the-week format for a standout hour that served as a fitting sendoff for Paget Brewster. The episode, stylishly directed by costar Matthew Gray Gubler, flashed back to her character Emily Prentiss' past as an undercover agent posing as an illegal arms dealer to seduce and take down IRA terrorist Ian Doyle (Timothy V. Murphy). Going rogue to shield her BAU "family" from the escaped psycho, Prentiss revealed she had staged the death of Doyle's beloved son, who was now living safely under a new identity.
But that wasn't the episode's only fakeout: With the aid of the State Department's JJ Jareau (returning fan fave A.J. Cook), Prentiss apparently duped at least some of her BAU coworkers into believing she died after getting impaled by Doyle. The final scene between JJ and Prentiss (presumably — we never saw her face) in Paris seemingly left the door open for Brewster to make a welcome return to the scene of the crime.
