FX Buys Charlie Sheen's New Sitcom Anger Management

Charlie Sheen

He's baaaaack. FX has bought Charlie Sheen's new sitcom, Anger Management, to air next summer, the cable network announced Thursday.

The project, based loosely on the 2003 Adam Sandler-Jack Nicholson film of the same name, will begin production in early 2012 on the 10-episode first season. Like Nicholson's character, Sheen will play an anger management therapist who is in need of some serious couch time himself and wreaks havoc on his patients' personal lives. Sheen will retain a "significant ownership stake" in the series, according to FX. Veteran sitcom writer-producer Bruce Helford (The Drew Carey Show, George Lopez) will serve as executive producer and showrunner.

Charlie Sheen's Anger Management project moves forward

If the show is successful, FX will pick up an additional 90 episodes of the series to air exclusively on FX until syndication starts in fall 2014. The model is similar to that of Tyler Perry's TBS sitcoms House of Payne and Are We There Yet?.

FX is already home to reruns of Sheen's former sitcom, Two and a Half Men. The actor was famously fired last year after he ranted against series executive producer Chuck Lorre, Warner Bros. and CBS, when the show failed to resume production after a hiatus was taken in order for Sheen to enter rehab.

Charlie Sheen, Warner Bros. reach a settlement over Two and a Half Men dispute

"We think that Bruce Helford, Joe Roth and Charlie Sheen have come up with a wonderful, hilarious vehicle for Charlie's acting talents—and a character we are very much looking forward to seeing him play," FX President and General Manager John Landgraf said in a statement.  "Two and a Half Men has been an outstanding component of FX's schedule for the past 14 months, and we have every confidence that Anger Management will soon be as well."
