NBC is planning a live broadcast of The Sound of Music, and Grammy winner Carrie Underwood has been cast in the lead role as Maria von Trapp, the network announced Friday.

Smash producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who are also producing the 85th Annual Academy Awards, will helm the telecast, which will be based on the original Broadway musical. A premiere date has not been announced, but it will air sometime during the 2013 holidays.
