Carey Mulligan Goes Back to Brunette Hair

Carey Mulligan

Carey Mulligan is getting back to her roots — literally — by sporting a new, darker 'do. The actress was spotted out and about New York City recently with chocolate brown locks.

Mulligan, 25, first got audiences' attention (as a brunette) for her Oscar-nominated performance in 2008's An Education. The actress then dyed her hair blonde in 2009 for a film role and had maintained her lighter locks since then.

Despite the old adage "blondes have more fun," Mulligan told Elle UK that she "hated" being a blonde.

"After An Education, I had a small part in Michael Mann's film Public Enemies and he wanted me to dye it white blonde, and it wrecked my hair," Mulligan told the magazine. "Literally, ruined it. It was falling apart, fried. So I had to cut it off. I cried."

Mulligan will next appear in the drama Shame and Baz Luhrmann's upcoming adaptation of The Great Gatsby.
