Christiane Amanpour, who has served as the face of CNN's international coverage for more than two decades, is leaving the cable news network to host ABC News' This Week.

Amanpour is "a highly respected journalist recognized around the world for her reporting," ABC News President David Westin said Thursday in an e-mail to his staff.  "She brings to her new position a wealth of experience and knowledge, as well as a deep commitment to bringing news of the world to the American people."

Amanpour, 52, also will appear on other ABC News programs and anchor prime-time documentaries for the network.

George Stephanopoulos had been the anchor of This Week, the Sunday morning talk show that competes with Face the Nation and Meet the Press, until he left in December for Good Morning America. Jake Tapper will be the interim host until Amanpour debuts in August.
