Matthew Broderick, Ben Stein Remember John Hughes at Private Funeral

John Hughes

Matthew Broderick, Ben Stein and Vince Vaughn were among the colleagues, family and friends who attended a private funeral in a Chicago suburb to remember John Hughes.

Mourners gathered Tuesday in Lake Forest, where Stein, who played the economics teacher in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, starring Broderick, was one of the speakers. He said the service was "very touching" and that there was "a lot of crying."

"We'll never see his like again," Stein told The Chicago Tribune afterward. "He was the Wordsworth of the suburban America post-war generation. He was a great, great, great genius and as much of a friend and a great family man as he was a poet."

Following the service, mourners gathered in a procession to Lake Forest cemetery, where Hughes was laid to rest.

Molly Ringwald, who starred in three Hughes films, did not attend the funeral, but penned a tribute to the late director in The New York Times. "In life, there is always that special person who shapes who you are, who helps to determine the person you become," she wrote. "For me, that person was John Hughes."

Hughes died of a heart attack at age 59 in New York City on Thursday.
