Fans were appalled by Spears' lack of interaction with the audience as well as lip-synching during her Australian debut of "The Circus" concert in Perth on Friday, according to The Daily Telegraph.
Some of the 17,000 fans were also enraged that they were unable to see Spears because the giant screens did not project her performance.
John Mayer, who is also Down Under promoting his new album, tweeted about the controversy: "If you're shocked that Britney was lip-syncing at her concert and want your money back, life may continue to be hard for you."
Meanwhile, Australian politicians have called for new laws to force music promoters to disclose whether a concert will be live or lip-synched, according to People.
The magazine also reported that Britney left many of her fans satisfied: They have flooded her Web site with messages of support, and praised her for putting on a good show.
