In Bridget Jones's Diary and its sequel, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, Renee Zellweger plays the working-class heroine who has a fondness for food, drinking and smoking and laments about the "Smug Marrieds" who plague her singleton life. The original was very loosely based on the plot of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, while the second has elements of Austen's Persuasion. In both films, Colin Firth played the "good guy" love interest, Mark Darcy, while Hugh Grant portrayed the "bad boy," Daniel Cleaver.

Although no other details about the third film are available, Firth had once told Access Hollywood one possible plot: Bridget has trouble conceiving children with Mark, and thus turns to Daniel for help, which of course, does not end well. Fielding began writing a third book in the series earlier this year.
