The Lorax Clobbers John Carter at the Weekend Box Office

John Carter failed to slay The Lorax in its opening weekend at the box office.
The sci-fi film, starring Friday Night Lights alum Taylor Kitsch, grossed an estimated $30.6 million to come in second, according to Box Office Mojo. Meanwhile, The Lorax nabbed another $39.1 million to stay at No. 1.

Project X ranked third, with $11.5 million. The new horror film Silent House took fourth place in its debut weekend, scaring up $7.01 million. Act of Valor followed closely behind, taking in $7 million to land at No. 5.
The weekend's third new release, Eddie Murphy's A Thousand Words, came in at sixth place with just $6.3 million. At No. 7, Safe House grabbed another $5 million.
Rounding out the top 10: The Vow (No. 8, $4 million), This Means War (No. 9, $3.7 million) and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (No. 10, $3.6 million).
