It was a close finish at the box office, as two new releases ended the weekend poised to tie for first, with a third new film close on their heels.
The new Jennifer Lawrence thriller House at the End of the Street grossed an estimated $13 million, the same amount Jake Gyllenhaal's cop drama End of Watch took in, Box Office Mojo reports. Following close behind was Trouble with the Curve, the baseball drama starring Clint Eastwood and Amy Adams, which slid into third place with $12.7 million.
Box Office: New Resident Evil leads weekend, but can't beat predecessors
Finding Nemo 3D kept afloat in its second week, dipping to fourth place with $9.4 million. Last week's No. 1 film, Resident Evil: Retribution fell to fifth place with $6.7 million.
The weekend's fourth major new release, the Judge Dredd remake Dredd, failed to conjure up much new business — taking in $6.3 million to take the No. 6 spot. The Master followed in seventh place, commanding $5 million after expanding to more than to 788 theaters.
Rounding out the top 10: The Possession (No. 8, $2.6 million), Lawless (No. 9, $2.3 million) and ParaNorman (No. 10, $2.2 million).
